After studying for an undergraduate degree in Biology and a Master’s degree in Biological Science at the University of Derby, I went on to earn a PhD in Planetary Sciences from the Open University

I worked as a research scientist for a few years, designing ways to simulate different planetary environments and testing whether microbes can survive and be transported in those environments. I also briefly worked as a climate scientist, focusing on growing microbes that produce methane to see how that affects our own atmosphere.

I then trained as a teacher working at a school in Hertfordshire. I also tutored a GCSE pupil after school. I found both experiences rewarding, but I decided the school environment was not for me. I believe I can have a greater positive impact in one-to-one and small-group sessions.

My teacher training, extensive university education and career as a research scientist uniquely position me to provide insight and expertise across the whole scientific story and to understand not only the knowledge and skills, but also how scientists use them and how they think scientifically. Ultimately, I aim to train young people to become early scientists, building their confidence to tackle scientific problems for the rest of their lives, rather than bombarding them with information to remember for one exam series.
